conquered “broth”, breakfast “Red Alert”

The red panda, the star of Pixar’s latest cartoon Red Alert, eats more than just bamboo leaves. Proof of this is the beautifully designed rice porridge, also called “congee”, a real Chinese breakfast.

Director Domi Shi inevitably seduced us bao, his short film released in 2018 that made us follow the adventures of a delicious little steamed bun that is very anthropomorphic. At the helm of Red Alert, available only on Disney+ without going through the movie box, she also shows her taste for baos at the table of young Meiling Li (let’s call her Mei, like everyone else), the heroine of the film.

However, things start off well for 13-year-old May, a college student in Toronto where she excels in math and has a group of friends who are just as big of a boy band fan as she is. An only child, she is pampered by her father (who cooks delicious Chinese meals) and deeply brooding by Ming, her mother, whom actress Sandra Oh lends her voice to. Problem: One fine morning, she wakes up not as a teenager, but as a big, furry and damned bulky red panda. She then discovers a family curse that strikes the women of her family during their teenage years, starting with her ancestor Sun Yi. With every strong emotion, she is there transformed… Cute but bulky and fragrant, what to do with the red panda that is in each of us?
