Some people believe that sleeping naked improves health and wellness in a variety of ways, including helping you fall asleep faster, improving relationships, and promoting reproductive health. 28% of French people1 report that they usually sleep naked.
Currently, there is little reliable data on the percentage of naked sleepers in the United States, nor is there much scientific research examining the effects of naked sleeping. Some studies provide insight into the benefits of sleeping naked.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults need at least seven hours of sleep each night, but one-third of adults2 sleep less than that. Lack of sleep is a major problem as it affects health. For example, lack of sleep increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes3.
Some people find that sleeping naked helps them fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. However, researchers have not directly investigated these benefits of sleeping naked. If sleeping naked helps you get the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep each night, then it’s worth a try. Studies have shown that sleeping naked can have a positive effect on reproductive health, relationships with partners, and self-esteem.
Potentially improved sleep
Our bodies are regulated by circadian rhythms4, which cycle through heating and cooling cycles throughout the day. When we start to feel tired at the end of the day, our melatonin production increases and our core body temperature drops5. This drop in body temperature continues throughout the night.
The optimal bedroom temperature6 is between 66 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit and is the key to good sleep. Overheating at night can interfere with sleep. For this reason, some people believe that sleeping naked helps your body cool down faster and sleep better. Researchers have not directly studied how sleeping naked affects sleep.
If you decide to sleep naked, make sure you have comfortable bedding. Cold, like heat, affects the quality of sleep. The researchers found that people who sleep half-naked are more vulnerable to changes in ambient temperature unless they have enough bed covers to prevent them from getting too cold throughout the night.
Sleeping naked can help prevent vaginal Candida overgrowth. An overgrowth of Candida can cause a yeast infection8, which can inflame the vaginal lining and cause pain and itching.
The risk of yeast infection is often increased by tight or synthetic underwear with insufficient air circulation9. Avoiding tight or ill-fitting underwear while sleeping is beneficial for vaginal health.
Sleep affects the health and appearance of your skin. If you’re tired and don’t get enough sleep, your skin is more prone to wrinkles, sagging, puffiness, and dark circles under the eyes10. Delaying or reducing sleep can affect your skin’s ability to heal wounds such as cuts, sores, and blisters11.
If sleeping naked helps you sleep better, it will improve skin health. Getting more sleep will help your skin regenerate, give it time to recover, and help you look your best. No research has yet been done on how sleeping naked affects the skin.
Sleeping naked has a positive effect on male fertility, but this has not been directly studied. Studies have shown that wearing tight underwear12 can reduce the vigor and quantity of sperm. For this reason, wearing tight underwear and wearing boxers can affect the concentration of sperm in men13. Additionally, there is evidence that scrotal cooling directly affects sperm health14 and motility.
Sleeping naked will help keep your body temperature cool. Although more research is needed on naked sleeping to draw firm conclusions, past research suggests that the cooling associated with naked sleeping increases sperm health.
Communication and self-esteem
Sleeping naked next to your partner will increase the satisfaction and connection of the couple. Partners who spend time in skin-to-skin contact feel less stressed15 and feel closer to their partners. Skin-to-skin contact releases the hormone oxytocin, which reduces anxiety and promotes feelings of security and love 16.
In addition to reducing stress, sleeping naked with your partner can help you feel good about your body. Spending time naked in the presence of others increases self-esteem17 and positive body image.
